Amy helps guide the stroller over the curb, and we cross the street to my driveway. I want to loiter outside until this weekend is over. I can’t imagine pretending everything is okay with the in-laws around.

The yard is in a state of seasonal transition; the pink and orange geraniums are now dried and brown, waiting for me to remove them before winter comes. Some leaves have started to fall from the surrounding trees, but it isn’t enough to warrant a rake of the yard yet.

I spot a paper cup in the gutter and pick it up to toss it in the garbage bin we keep in the garage. I push the stroller in between Amy’s car and our SUV, heading towards the garage door. That’s when I notice it.

“Amy, come here.”

“What’s up?” She walks in between the cars to meet me. “Oh, shit.”

Someone has been in our driveway.
